I am passionately fond of animals and plants since my childhood. I therefore studied biology at the University of Namur (Belgium) and specialized in freshwater ecology. For my master thesis I spent 4 months along Congo river and studied taxonomy and biology of African elephantfish (Mormyridae). There I have been puzzled by the complexity of defining a species. I graduated in 2005 and started working as a teaching assistant at the University of Namur, combining teaching activities and PhD research. For my PhD thesis, I decided to work on invasive organisms: the basket clams of the genus Corbicula spp. Interestingly, these odd creatures reproduce through androgenesis: during fertilization, the maternal chromosomes are extruded from the oocyte and the unreduced sperm provides the complete nuclear genome to the offspring! I am studying phylogeny and phylogeography of these clams and the role of androgenesis in their invasiveness. I am also interested in assessing the impact of Corbicula clams on aquatic ecosystems, here the Meuse river. I am particularly interested in biodiversity, taxonomy, phylogeny, phylogeography and evolution.

Boris Hespeels, assistant
Contacts: boris.hespeels@fundp.ac.be; Tel. +32 81/72 42 86

With a Master degree in Molecular and Cellular biology at the University of Namur (in 2009) my formation was oriented towards genetics and plant biology. My Master thesis entitled “Breeding for pathogen resistance of the industrial chicory using class 1 molecular markers” was under supervision of Pr P. Van Cutsem and Dr N. Dauchot (URBV, FUNDP). During my Master I also did 4 months training period at ‘Instituut voor Landbouw en Visserij Onderzoek’ (ILVO), Melle, Belgium. My project there was entitled “AFLP studies of Buxus population and searching to flowering candidate genes on Rhododendron species”.
In 2009, I started my PhD under supervision of Pr K. Van Doninck. My research contains three parts: the study of desiccation in bdelloid rotifers, developing AFLP markers for a population genetic study of one bdelloid species and the transformation of bdelloid rotifers. As a teaching assistant of Pr K. Van Doninck, I give the following practical works at the University of Namur: zoology, bioinformatics in genomics, physiology, marine biology.

I studied biology (2005 – 2010) at the University of Namur (FUNDP, Belgium) and specialized in biodiversity. The aim of my Master thesis was a contribution to a phylogeographical study of the invasive basket clam Corbicula. This work was supervised by Pr. Karine Van Doninck and Lise-Marie Pigneur (PhD student). During my Master Internship in China I studied the behaviour of captive dolphins. I graduated in 2010 and obtained the “Jacques Kets Award” for the best Master Thesis.
In October 2010 I obtained a FNRS PhD grant to do research at the University of Namur (FUNDP) with Pr. K. Van Doninck. My PhD project investigates the phylogeography, population genetics and mode of reproduction of the invasive Quagga mussel Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (Andrusov  1897).
